The neighborhood you stay in Cartagena shapes your entire experience of the city. Stay in the Walled City and you wake up inside one of the most beautiful urban environments in the Americas, the sounds of the city filtering through shuttered windows, the walk to breakfast a street-level parade of color. Stay in Bocagrande and you have a beach at your door and a high-rise view of the Caribbean.
Neither is wrong. But they are different trips. This guide will help you choose.
Staying in the Walled City (Ciudad Amurallada)
For most first-time visitors and for any traveler who wants to be at the heart of Cartagena's historic character — the Walled City is the right answer. The boutique hotels here are converted colonial mansions with interior courtyards, rooftop pools, and service that tends toward the genuinely attentive.
The trade-off is that the Walled City has no beach. You are a 10–15 minute taxi ride from the nearest beach. For a trip focused on culture, food, and the city itself, this barely registers. For a trip where beach access is a daily priority, factor it in.
Sofitel Legend Santa Clara — Luxury
The most famous hotel in Cartagena and, for many guests, the most memorable stay of their travel lives. The Santa Clara is housed in a 17th-century convent, the original chapel is now the bar, the cloisters frame a garden pool, and the architecture is so extraordinary that guests spend their first hour simply walking the corridors.
The rooms in the historic wing are the ones to book, newer rooms in the adjacent tower are more comfortable but lack the character that makes this hotel legendary.
Casa San Agustín — Luxury Boutique
Consistently one of Cartagena's highest-rated hotels, Casa San Agustín occupies three connected colonial houses in the San Diego neighborhood, quieter and more residential than El Centro, and arguably the most beautiful part of the Walled City.
The rooftop pool is the best in the city. The service is personalized in a way that larger properties rarely achieve. Book the patio suites if available.
Hotel Quadrifolio — Mid-Range Boutique
A 15-room boutique in a beautifully restored colonial mansion, intimate, thoughtfully designed, and staffed by people who genuinely seem to enjoy what they do. Quadrifolio is the hotel that consistently over-delivers for its price point: better breakfast than hotels three times the cost, a rooftop terrace that is genuinely pleasant in the evenings, and a location that puts you on foot to everything.
Hotel LM — Design Boutique
One of Cartagena's newer boutique properties, Hotel LM has quickly established a reputation for contemporary design within a colonial shell, the kind of hotel where the aesthetics are considered enough that guests photograph the interiors as much as the street outside. Excellent pool, strong restaurant.
Staying in Getsemaní
Getsemaní is Cartagena's creative neighborhood and it is where the most interesting new accommodation is opening. Staying here puts you in the most locally authentic part of the city: surrounded by street art, independent restaurants, and a neighborhood energy that the Walled City, with its tourist density, cannot replicate.
It is also marginally less convenient for the Walled City's main sights and somewhat noisier on weekend nights. For travelers who prioritize authenticity and the emerging food scene over polish, it is the better choice.
Hotel Boutique Relicario del Carmen — Boutique
A colonial building in the heart of Getsemaní, beautifully converted with a rooftop pool and rooms that balance character and comfort well. One of the most consistent options in the neighborhood.
Casa Villa Colonial — Mid-Range
A solid, well-located mid-range option in Getsemaní with friendly service and a small pool — the kind of place that consistently reviews well because it delivers exactly what it promises without pretension.
Staying in Bocagrande
Bocagrande is modern Cartagena — high-rise hotels, shopping centers, and a long beachfront strip on a peninsula south of the old city. It lacks entirely the colonial character that makes Cartagena exceptional, but it has the beach, and for travelers who want to be in and out of the water daily, that matters.
The neighborhood is also where many all-inclusive properties and business hotels are located. If budget is a primary consideration and you are happy to taxi into the old city for the sights, Bocagrande offers lower rates for equivalent room quality.
Hotel Capilla del Mar — Classic
A Cartagena institution , a large beachfront hotel in Bocagrande that has been hosting guests for decades. The rooms are comfortable and the beach access is genuinely excellent. Not boutique, but reliable and well-located for beach-focused travelers.
Hyatt Regency Cartagena — Contemporary
The best of the contemporary hotel options in Bocagrande well-run, excellent pool, good restaurant, and the reliability of a global brand in a city where smaller properties can occasionally over-promise.
How to Choose: A Quick Decision Guide
You want to be immersed in the historic city — stay in the Walled City, specifically San Diego neighborhood. Sofitel Santa Clara or Casa San Agustín for luxury; Hotel Quadrifolio for excellent value.
You want local authenticity and the best food scene — Getsemaní. Relicario del Carmen for boutique comfort.
You want beach access every day — Bocagrande. Accept the trade-off of distance from the historic city.
You are traveling as a group — the Walled City boutique hotels work beautifully for smaller groups. For larger groups (10+), Bocagrande's larger properties offer better block-booking terms and group amenities.
Budget is a primary consideration — Bocagrande and Getsemaní offer better value than the Walled City for comparable room quality. The Walled City boutiques command a premium for their location and character.
A Note on Booking Timing
Cartagena is a genuinely popular destination and the best properties fill quickly — particularly in high season (December–April) and over US holiday weekends. If you are traveling in February, March, or over Christmas, book your preferred property as soon as your travel dates are confirmed. The Walled City boutiques run at high occupancy for most of the dry season.
